Why am I asking you to leave your shoes at the door? It’s not just about keeping the floors clean, although that’s part of it. No, it’s something deeper, something rooted in my deep passion for gathering with grace.
Often when visiting friends, I am asked to “leave my shoes at the door”. At first, I wondered why. Why take off my shoes? As I removed my shoes, funny enough, my mind began to quiet, and the weight of the day, the rush of thoughts, the expectations I had carried in, started to fade. I was no longer armed for battle - I was here and present.
"When you leave your shoes at the door, you leave behind more than just dirt or mud. You leave behind the weight of the world. You leave behind your judgments, your assumptions, your fears. Turns out, my shoes are a metaphor for my heart.
Without the heaviness of my judgments, I was free to ask questions, to learn, to grow. I was free to step into spaces not as someone carrying a story or a belief, but as someone willing to discover new ones.
And so, every time I gather with my family and friends, I leave my shoes at the door. I leave behind my assumptions about people, about situations, and about what I think I know. I let go of my fears and prejudices, and I allow myself to step into the day with curiosity, humility, and wonder.
My holiday wish for you and yours? Just enjoy each other and leave your shoes at the door.
